Laurie Keller: My Writing Hero
By: Ysabela Golden
Anyone who knows me knows that I love to read, but who could get me to read as much as I do?
When I picture my hero I see a smile. I see brown hair, a slight tan, and a happy nature.
I am very lucky to have gotten to know such a fantastic author. I first met her at the library my cousin Megan works at. It was astounding, and since then I’ve seen her at several different places- we’ve even had breakfast together. It is awesome to be able to say I know my hero.
My hero is smart and full of interesting ideas, you could tell that just from reading one of her books. She’s funny, (safety goggles necessary: entering sprinkle zone) a fantastic writer and illustrator, (she used to make Hallmark cards) and she writes kids picture books that are amazing, including “Arnie the Donut”, “Do Unto Otters”, “Open Wide: Tooth School Inside”, and “Scrambled States of America.”
My hero is a great author. She brings laughs in her writing. Many of her books teach lessons and morals, like Do Unto Otters, a book about the golden rule, Open Wide, a book about teeth who go to school to learn about how to take care of themselves, and Scrambled States, a book about the states switching places, teaches about geography, as well as giving parents a chance to breathe as their kids plunge into her books.
When I was younger, about 5, my mom found me one of her books, Arnie the Donut. I read it hungrily, finding new things with each read, even to this day finding more surprises in its pages, an alien asking for donuts, a caveman rolling a donut around like a wheel in the background, a muffin named Fran that wants her own book: “I can see it now: Fran the Muffin!” Her books started me reading, which is now the thing I’m best at. She started me writing, now one of my favorite hobbies. Because writing is like reading: you’re discovering a story, but it comes from your imagination, not the pages of a book.
Laurie Keller is my hero because she started me reading and writing. My reading forms a large part of my life, (because about 60% of my life has been spent reading) and so does my writing. Not only do they make fun pastimes, but they also help enormously with school. And these are the reasons why Laurie Keller is my hero.

That's really good!
